For social entrepreneurs, non profits, and social ventures with missions centered around inspiring, educating, and uplifting others – service is more than just a hobby, it’s a business. And, for those who are energized by community and driven by a passion to serve, the Ford Resource and Engagement Center (FREC) provides the perfect platform to engage the culturally rich communities on the East and West sides of Detroit.

In November, when we placed a request for service providers to submit applications to partner with the FREC, the response from Detroit area social entrepreneurs came pouring in.

Twenty-two applicants passed the base screening process and were invited to come before a panel of neighborhood stakeholders at Community Pitch Day.

When it comes to selecting potential service providers, who better to decide what services are most needed than the actual recipients of them?

“If someone just parachutes into a community and points and says here’s some things we think you need, we all could miss the mark tremendously,” said  FREC Partner and Director of Development at Eastern Market Corporation, Tracy Rivard.

This is precisely why the FREC empowers the community to have a voice in the process.

Once all pitches were heard on Community Pitch Day, neighborhood panelist were invited to score candidates by phone via Candid Micro-Survey technology.

The process made for a fun, educational, and interactive community event. Stay tuned over the coming weeks as we reveal our 2018 FREC Service Providers!
